Bescherm en Onderwijs. Dat is de vrije vertaling van onze bedrijfsnaam, en het omschrijft gelijk de beoogde doelen.
Moderne zelfverdediging en Historische Krijgskunsten zijn de twee pilaren van SALVO.
De historische link is duidelijk zichtbaar in ons logo en de historische krijgskunsten zijn bij SALVO dan ook de specialiteit. De workshops zwaardvechten met het middeleeuws langzwaard en de privélessen in de Historical European Martial Arts zijn dan ook gestoeld op uitgebreide historische kennis, vakkennis en ervaring.
En met betrekking tot zelfverdediging is onze missie simpel: mensen helpen hun persoonlijke veiligheid en de veiligheid van hun naasten effectief te vergroten, door lessen aan te bieden die stilstaan bij de essentiële basis. De focus ligt op simpele, beproefde technieken zonder poespas, voor praktische resultaten in korte tijd.
SALVO zet zich te allen tijde in voor een veilige, inclusieve leeromgeving.

Protect and teach. That is the loose translation of our company name, and it aptly describes our goals.
Modern Self-Defense and Historical European Martial Arts are two pillars of SALVO.
The historical link is immediately recognizable in our logo, and the Historical European Martial Arts are clearly the speciality at SALVO. Our workshops historical sword fighting with the medieval longsword, and the private classes in the Historical European Martial Arts are based on extensive historical knowledge, expertise and practical experience.
And with regards to Self-Defense, however, our mission is simple: we aim to help people effectively increase their personal safety, and that of the people around them. This, by focussing on the absolute fundaments of Self-Defense. By focussing on simple, tried and tested techniques without fluff to 'expand the curriculum', for practical results in a short time.
SALVO always endeavours to provide a safe and inclusive atmosphere.
Met oog voor historie
Het is geen toeval dat de symboliek van het logo aansluit bij de twee pilaren van SALVO: moderne zelfverdediging, en historische krijgskunsten. Voor de zelfverdediging is de hellebaard, het gereedschap van mensen in beschermende rollen door de eeuwen heen (zoals poortwachters en lijfwachten), een ideaal symbool voor onze aanpak: praktisch en slagvaardig, maar met de hoop dat het nooit nodig zal zijn het te moeten gebruiken. De groene kleur komt voort uit de heraldiek van de stad Groningen, waar het idee voor SALVO ontstaan is. Een groene baan op een witte of zilveren achtergrond siert sinds de 15e eeuw het stadswapen, en werd reeds in de 13e eeuw gebruikt door de Groninger prefecten.
Via SALVO is het mogelijk de geschiedenis in eigen hand te nemen. Maak kennis met middeleeuws zwaardvechten, met het machtige langzwaard, zoals de oude meesters het te boek gesteld hebben, en duik onder professionele begeleiding in de historische Europese krijgskunsten.
With history in mind
It is not a coincidence that the symbolism of our logo neatly fits with the two pillars of SALVO: modern Self-Defense and Historical European Martial Arts. The halberd: a tool of choice of people in protective roles throughout centuries (such as watchmen and bodyguards of old). As such, the halberd is an ideal symbol for approach: practical and impactful, yet with the hope that it shall never be needed in earnest.
The colour green in the logo is derived from the heraldry of the city of Groningen, where the idea for SALVO was born. A green band over a white or silver background has been part of the city's coat of arms since the 15th century, and was already used by prefects of the city in the 13th century.
Through SALVO it is possible to take history literally into your own hands. Try the medieval sword fighting techniques with the mighty longsword first hand, just as the old masters had them recorded in medieval manuscripts, and dive into Historical European Martial Arts with expert guidance.
Maurice Booij
Als oprichter speelt Maurice Booij met SALVO volledig in op zijn persoonlijke expertises.
Op 7-jarige leeftijd begon zijn reis in de wereld van de martial arts en nu, pakweg 25 jaar later en met bijna een decennium als instructeur met ervaring in binnen- en buitenland, bundelt hij zijn kennis en ervaring in de diensten van SALVO.
Doelgericht en praktisch op het gebied van veiligheid en zelfverdediging, en voorzien van een tomeloze (en vermakelijke) schat aan kennis met betrekking tot de historische krijgskunsten: in alles is er oog voor details en voor persoonlijke drempels en uitdagingen. Want hoewel hij tegenwoordig met regelmaat acte de présence geeft op (inter)nationale contactsporttoernooien, begon zijn eigen reis door de vechtsportwereld op de basisschool bij judo, op aanraden van de schoolarts om een achterstand in motorische ontwikkeling weg te werken. Naar eigen zeggen: "Fysiek talent heb ik nooit in heel grote mate gehad, vroeger. Maar 25 jaar doorzetten heeft me gebracht waar ik nu ben. Volgens mij is dat wat het geduld en begrip gekweekt heeft, wat de interactie met leerlingen van alle niveau's zo prettig en nuttig maakt."
Maurice Booij
In founding SALVO, Maurice Booij fully plays into his expertise.
At 7 years old his martial arts journey began, and now, rougly 25 years later and with nearly a decade of experience as an instructor teaching in the Netherlands and abroad, he combines his knowledge and experience in the services of SALVO.
Goal oriented and practical when it comes to safety and Self-Defense, and with a considerable (and entertaining) wealth of knowledge regarding the Historical European Martial Arts: in everything there is attention to detaill, and attention to personal hurdles and challenges. Because, even though he can nowadays be seen competing regularily at (inter)national martial arts tournments; his own martial arts journey began with judo, in primary school, following advise from the school physician in order to improve a lagging motor skill development.
According to his own words: "I never had an abundance of physical talent, growing up, but 25 years of pushing through has brought me where I am today. That is probably what bred the patience and understanding which makes interaction with students of all levels so pleasant and useful."
